The Desolation of Smaug is part two of the The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey was released December 13th in the U.S. I must say that The Desolation of Smaug is my favorite part thus far of the The Hobbit movies, even topping the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy all to together. The movie definitely deserves the 4/5 stars (8.5/10) it has received for all the effort and time put into creating this wonderful movie all together. The movie is 2 hours and 41 minutes long, falling eight minutes short of the The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey at 2 hours and 49 minutes (extended version being 3 hours and 2 minutes).
The effects in the movie are beautiful. Smaug is possible the best CGI (Computer-generated image) Character I've seen. Smaug has such fluid motions and beautiful detail- he seems so real. Benedict Cumberbatch (the actor who voiced & did motion capture for Smaug and the Necromancer in the film) really played his part so well. I was very impressed with him.
However, there was something that irked me greatly about the movie- It didn't follow the story. A lot happens at the end of the movie, clearly it urges you to see the next movie, but I feel like it’s all going to be too much at once. The Hobbit is not that big of a book compared to the rest of the Lord of the Rings and it seems like they’re milking the movie for everything they can get, which is a lot considering the total profit of 1.3 billion for just Desolation of Smaug so far. Even so, I still urge you see the movie, this is just my opinion of what i think.
